9781536202946 A Bus Called Heaven Bob Graham “In a story where every turn is possible, if improbable, Graham makes readers believe. High hopes and busy, vibrant artwork . . . will entice children.” — Booklist (starred review) One morning in front of Stella’s house, an abandoned bus appears, looking sad as a whale on a beach. On its front, held up with packing tape, is a hand-painted sign that says Heaven. Right away, the bus brings change to Stella’s street when people stop to talk about it instead of rushing by. “This bus could be ours,” Stella declares. With a master’s eye for finding the magic in the mundane, Bob Graham creates an encouraging story about community — a whimsical tale about neighbors of all ages and stripes coming together, and about one little girl who comes into her own. 9780763669713 A Piece of Home Jeri Watts A child-friendly story about the trials and triumphs of starting over in a new place while keeping family and traditions close. When Hee Jun’s family moves from Korea to West Virginia, he struggles to adjust to his new home. His eyes are not big and round like his classmates’, and he can’t understand anything the teacher says, even when she speaks s-l-o-w-l-y and loudly at him. As he lies in bed at night, the sky seems smaller and darker. But little by little Hee Jun begins to learn English words and make friends on the playground. And one day he is invited to a classmate’s house, where he sees a flower he knows from his garden in Korea — mugunghwa, or rose of Sharon, as his friend tells him — and Hee Jun is happy to bring a shoot to his grandmother to plant a “piece of home” in their new garden. Lyrical prose and lovely illustrations combine in a gentle, realistic story about finding connections in an unfamiliar world. Candlewick Press

9780375829338 Baby Animals (Little Golden Book) Garth Williams Garth Williams’s adorable baby animals in a durable board book!No one has illustrated animals with as much warmth, humor, texture, and life as Garth Williams. Simple, humorous text identifies each baby animal capering about the woods, desert, or mountainsThis longtime Little Golden Book favorite is now available as a sturdy Little Golden Treasure for a new generation of kids who will love the realistically portrayed animals on each page!Children's LiteratureThe binding made me immediately think of my collection of Little Golden Books, and what a treasure they were. Now many of the stories have been reissued in a variety of formats. This board book version of the Baby Animals is a delight. The characteristics of about a dozen animals are introduced, raging from the common squirrel and chipmunk to the more exotic kangaroo, giraffe and koala bear. Kids will learn that: koalas live in Australia just like kangaroos; that monkeys can use their hands, feet and tail to hold onto things like a tree branch; opossum can pretend to be dead; and although a baby giraffe makes no sound, he can run very fast. The pictures are reasonably realistic, but they do give the animals a bit of personality. The fox looks sly, the lamb very happy and the skunk shocked to see his friend the opossum looking as if he is dead. The ending is a bit of a surprise as the Baby Owl asks who is ready for bed and who is awake and asleep. A pleasant bedtime read. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot Golden Books
