9781423138495 Deadly Little Lies (B&N Custom Pub) laurie-faria-stolarz Last fall, sixteen-year-old Camelia fell for Ben, the mysterious new boy at school who turned out to have a very mysterious gift—pyschometry, the ability to sense the future through touch. But just as Camelia and Ben's romance began to heat up, he abruptly left town. Brokenhearted, Camelia has spent the last few months studying everything she can about psychometry, and experiencing her own strange brushes with premonition. Camelia wonders if Ben's abilities have somehow rubbed off on her. Can the power of psychometry be transferred? Even once Ben returns to school, Camelia can't get close enough to share her secret with him. Despite the romantic tension between them, Ben remains aloof, avoiding contact. Then when a series of eerie notes echoes the threats of last semester—and Ben keeps his distance—Camelia makes the painful decision to let go and move on. Adam, the hot new guy at work, seems good for her in ways Ben wasn't. Adam is easygoing, and seems to really care about her.But when Camelia and Adam start dating, a surprising love triangle results. A chilling sequence of events upturns secrets from Ben's past—and Adam's. Someone is lying, and it’s up to Camelia to figure out who—before it’s too late.VOYANow that her stalker-turned-abductor is out of the picture, Camelia should be able to relax. But, she is constantly unsettled by a series of pranks and the new strange powers she seems to be developing that enable her to predict the future through her artwork. Then, her mysterious flame, Ben, reappears, but insists he just wants to be friends. So, Camelia reluctantly starts dating a new guy at work. Camelia and Ben are continually drawn back to one another, but new twists of events make Camelia wonder if Ben is more dangerous than he seems. Readers already invested in the Touch (Disney Hyperion) series may want to continue, and the events of the previous book are neatly recapped for new readers. Ben's aloofness seems more like a plot contrivance than a natural turn of events, however, and it is hard to understand why everyone (including her parents) thinks Camelia's previous abductor would be too smart to ignore the restraining order against him. Much of the book drags, and the repartee with Camelia's best friends is even more grating this time around. Periodic excerpts from Camelia's crazy aunt's diary are also more of a distraction than anything. Nonetheless, it is refreshing to see a heroine with outside interests beyond her love life. While some of the scenes are sultry, the one bedroom scene with Ben leaves almost everything to the imagination. Consider this for large collections where paranormal romances are popular. 9780312367466 Elsewhere: A Novel Zevin, Gabrielle Is it possible to grow up while getting younger?Publishers WeeklyEven readers who have strong views on what happens after death may find themselves intrigued by the fascinating world of "Elsewhere," the place 15-year-old Liz ends up after she is killed in a bicycle accident. A surreal atmosphere permeates chapter one as Liz awakens on a ship (mostly occupied by elderly people), unaware of its destination. Her situation gradually comes into focus after she arrives at the island of Elsewhere and is greeted by her grandmother, who died before Liz was born. Liz learns that the aging process works differently in this land of the dead: instead of getting older, humans (and animals) grow younger. When they reach infancy, they are sent down the River to be reborn on Earth. In other ways, Elsewhere resembles the world Liz left behind; residents work at jobs (although here, everyone has a chance to pursue an "avocation... something a person does to make his or her soul complete"), celebrate holidays and form friendships. Liz also falls in love for the first time, while her grandmother (who has progressed back to her thirties) becomes engaged to a famous rock star; and readers will likely be intrigued by the "strictly forbidden" Well. Prudently skirting the issue of God's role in Elsewhere (when she asks about God, Liz is told simply "God's there in the same way He, She, or It was before to you. Nothing has changed"), Margarettown author Zevin, in her first novel for young people, bends the laws of physics and biology to create an intricately imagined world. Ages 12-up. (Sept.)
