9780064467209 | Super Sand Castle Saturday (MathStart 2) | Murphy, Stuart J. | One Saturday at the beach, Laura, Juan, and Sarah decide to have a sand castle contest. As the tide rises, the walls get longer, the towers get taller, and the moats get deeper. The friends measure their sand castles with spoons, shovels, and bare feet until Larry the lifeguard and his tape measure surprise them all.Children's LiteratureLarry the lifeguard is having a contest to see who can build the sandcastle with the tallest towers, deepest moat and longest wall, all before the tide comes in. Sarah wants to build the tallest tower, but sees that Juan's tower is getting tall also. They decide to use their shovels to measure which tower is higher. Juan and Laura use spoons to measure which moat is deepest. The kids use their feet to measure who has the longest wall. When the contest is over, Larry uses a measuring tape to repeat the measurements. The results differ from the kids' initial findings, because they were not using a standard measure. A brief parent's guide also suggests other books that might be of interest. Beautiful stylized illustrations are clean and colorful but elaborate enough to be visually interesting. The simplicity of this artwork makes it easier to follow the measuring concepts discussed. | HarperCollins |

9780060531645 | Tally O'Malley (MathStart 2) | Murphy, Stuart J. | The O'Malleys are off to the beach! But it's a long, hot, boring drive. What can Eric, Bridget, and Nell do to keep busy? Play tally games, of course — counting up all the gray cars or green T-shirts they see. Whoever has the most marks at the end wins the game.Eric wins the first game. Bridget wins the second. It seems like poor Nell will never win a game! But Nell has the luck of the Irish on her side, and a surprise in store for her big brother and sister.Andrea Sears Andrews - Children's LiteratureOn the way to their vacation spot, the O'Malley family decides to pass the time in the car more quickly by playing a game. Relying on an old family favorite, they play the tally game where certain objects are sought after and then recorded in tallies. Each child in the family—three in all—is responsible for a particular object and must record sightings in tally marks. After a designated time, the one with the most tallies wins. The three children all covet the prize for winning a game—-the plastic shamrock necklace. The youngest of the children, Nell, does not have any luck in the first two rounds. However, she is able to pull out a victory at the end of the book and receives the beloved necklace. As part of the MathStart series, this book (graded a two out of three in difficulty) does a solid job reinforcing the concept of tally marks to its readers. The tally mark recordings are always shown within the illustrations so that the reader can follow their progression. Resources dealing with the same subject matter are listed in the back of the book along with extension activity ideas for parents and children. This book is a good support in a classroom introducing tally marks or focusing on the patterns of numbers. 2004, Harper Collins, Ages 5 to 9. | HarperCollins |

9780698115729 | The Art Lesson (Paperstar Book) | dePaola, Tomie | Having learned to be creative in drawing pictures at home, young Tommy is dismayed when he goes to school and finds the art lesson there much more regimented.Publishers WeeklyA boy named Tommy loves to draw with his Binney & Smith Crayola crayons, and these pictures hang on his side of the room, in his mother's kitchen, at the barber shop where his father works, in the store of his Irish grandparents and in the home of his Italian grandmother Nana. Tommy? Nana? This work of picture-book fiction is really a gem of an autobiography, and readers familiar with dePaola's work will find wonderful, well-placed clues to his lifetime of artistry among these pages. Tommy starts school, and can't wait for the day when the art teacher comes. But there are a couple of hitches: the paints at school are cracked and powdery (and blow ``right off the paper''), and the art teacher only lets the children have one piece of paper, on which to ``copy'' her drawings. Tommy, who has been told by his aunts (twins, who are artists) that real artists never copy, has a crisis. But his teachers (including Tommy's regular classroom teacher) show themselves to be far more understanding than readers could have predicted, and all ends well. Inventive and revealing, dePaola provides a lyrical blend of text and art. This is an inspired and childlike offering, perhaps one of dePaola's best. Ages 5-8. (Apr.) | Puffin Books |
