9780743477369 Dracula (Enriched Classics) Stoker, Bram The punctured throat, the coffin lid slowly opening, the unholy shriek as the stake pierces the heart—these are just a few of the chilling images Bram Stoker unleashed upon the world with his 1897 masterpiece, Dracula. Inspired by the folk legend of nosferatu, the undead, Stoker created a timeless tale of gothic horror and romance that has enthralled and terrified readers ever since.A true masterwork of storytelling, Dracula has transcended generation, language, and culture to become one of the most popular novels ever written. It is a quintessential tale of suspense and horror, boasting one of the most terrifying characters ever born in literature: Count Dracula, a tragic, night-dwelling specter who feeds upon the blood of the living, and whose diabolical passions prey upon the innocent, the helpless, and the beautiful. But Dracula also stands as a bleak allegorical saga of an eternally cursed being whose nocturnal atrocities reflect the dark underside of the supremely moralistic age in which it was originally written — and the corrupt desires that continue to plague the modern human condition.Publishers WeeklyThis illustrated adaptation of Bram Stoker's work trades the epistolary nature of the original for a condensed, third-person narration, supplemented by selections from Jonathan Harker's journal entries and from John Seward's memoirs. Hitting the major plot points, like Jonathan's arrival at Dracula's castle and Lucy's frightening transformation, Raven retains much of the subtle terror of Jonathan's imprisonment, while providing Mina with more volition (" ‘Tonight we end this,' added Mina firmly"). Readers will likely be chilled by Gilbert's evocative ink and colored pencil images and drawn to the enigmatic Count, with his long, blond hair and violet eyes. A lavish and accessible retelling. Ages 12-up. (July) Simon & Schuster

9780766027916 Edwin Hubble: Discoverer Of Galaxies (Great Minds Of Science) Datnow, Claire L. Through many nights of hard work and tedious observations, Edwin Hubble discovered that our galaxy-the Milky Way-is just one of many galaxies. It was once believed that the Milky Way was the only galaxy in the entire universe. With Hubble's discovery, scientists began to understand that the universe was much larger and more complicated than they had ever imagined. Hubble also proved that the galaxies he studied were moving away from the earth. This meant that the universe is expanding! Because of his discoveries Edwin Hubble became an international celebrity. For bringing us an understanding of the universe, Edwin Hubble is remembered as one of the great minds of science.VOYAThese two books, additions to the Great Minds of Science series that includes the Issac Newton biography reviewed recently (VOYA February 1997), will be greatly appreciated by teachers seeking to find resources suitable for transdisciplinary study. The experimentation by the scientists is simply and clearly recounted in both books, using language that is suitable for students of middle school age or younger. Datnow and Klare also emphasize the historic context in which the scientists worked. The Hubble title includes many photos of the scientist, his family, and his associates. The Mendel book includes fewer photos, but there are several diagrams illustrating inherited traits of peas. The books give instructions for simple activities students might undertake, as well as suggestions for further study. High school students will easily become acquainted with the significant contributions of these scientists. I highly recommend these two books, as well as the biographies of Antoine Lavoisier, Louis Pasteur, and Gallileo Galilei, also in the series. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Further Reading. 9780375703058 Ellen Foster Gibbons, Kaye "When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy. I would figure out this or that way and run it down through my head until it got easy." So begins the tale of Ellen Foster, the brave and engaging heroine of Kay Gibbons's first novel, which won the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Institute of Arts and Letters. Wise, funny, affectionate, and true, Ellen Foster is, as Walker Percy called it, "The real thing. Which is to say, a lovely, sometimes heartwrenching novel. . . . [Ellen Foster] is as much a part of the backwoods South as a Faulkner character—and a good deal more endearing."Alice HoffmanIf one should never trust the person who has had a happy childhood, then Ellen Foster, the 11-year-old heroine of Kaye Gibbons's accomplished first novel, may be the most trustworthy character in recent fiction....In many ways this is an old-fashioned novel about traditional values and inherited prejudices, taking place in a South where too little has changed too slowly....What might have been grim, melodramatic material in the hands of a less talented author is instead filled with lively humor, compassion and intimacy. This short novel focuses on Ellen's strengths rather than her victimization, presenting a memorable heroine who rescues herself. -- New York Times Vintage Books

9780307887443 Histoire Critique De Manichée Et Du Manichéisme... (French Edition) Beausobre, Isaac de, Formey At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed. It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.   For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig. And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle. Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.    A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready? Wentworth Press
