0531057550 A Balloon For Grandad Nigel Gray Product DescriptionAs Sam cries for his red and silver balloon as it drifts away from his home, he and his father fantasize a lush tale in which the balloon is off to fetch Sam's grandfather Abdulla from the faraway land of AfricaFrom Publishers WeeklySam's balloon escapes and flies up into the blue sky. "I want my balloon," he cries, to which the wind responds, "It's mine!" and carries it away. Sam's father is reassuring, however, with his description of the balloon's progress as it journeys across mountains and drifts "high over the hot yellow sand of the desert." He tells how it flies past falcons, hawks and vultures and comes to land on an island where Sam's Grandad Abdulla lives, tending his goats and date trees. The balloona vivid red with silver starsfloats down to Grandad Abdulla who receives it as a gift from his distant grandson. Exotic pictures, richly bordered in mosaic-like frames, capture the feeling of adventure; adults and children alike will appreciate the surprising treatment of what seems to be, at first, a loss. Ages 3-7.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalKindergarten-Grade 2 The popularity of Lamorisse's The Red Balloon (Doubleday, 1967) will not be threatened by this new story of an errant balloon. The plot is too far-fetched even for children who love fantasy. A young boy's balloon flies out the back door and, according to Dad, sails across mountains, the sea, and a desert and ends up on an island in a river. This is not just any island but happens to be the exact island where the boy's Grandad Abdulla lives. Along the way the balloon avoids sandgrouse, falcons, hawks, and vultures and softly glides right into Grandad's yard. Grandad, of course, reaches for the balloon and knows instantly that it is from his grandson Sam. Ray's vibrant watercolor illustrations are delightful, except for the sameness of expressions on the parents' faces. Details abound in each large illustration, and Ray's technique of highlighting a small detail from the larger picture is clever and eye-catching. Readers first captured by the illustrations will be disappointed upon reading the text. Barbara S. McGinn, Oak Hill Elementary School, Severna Park, Md .Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.
